Is India the death to American Literature?

This week the Brown University Literary Arts is hosting a week long panel called, “New Indian Writing: The Rising Generation.”  Last night Rana Dasgupta brought fire to a less-than-packed Brown Literary Arts theater.  Sure, he probably went on a little too long, but by the time he was finished it made me want to move to Delhi, India.  There were dry parts, but anytime you deliver an hour long speech there are going to be moments when your attention span wanders.  It was refreshing to see a writer take on a talk with such magnitude.  Most of the visiting writers I’ve seen come through Brown seem to pick a section of their work at random and drone through the reading which can be alright if you’re a good reader.  My point, it was nice to have a writer actually seem to care.  Unfortunately, this is probably one of the reasons why American literature is going to die.  I take that back.  USA #1.  What’s up America?  Time to step our game up.  Besides, India might have already peaked.  The new rising generation?  Antarctica.  Already working on getting a grant for next winter to begin a novel set in the south pole.
