I saw John Updike again and John Wattle was there

There are two people in the above picture.  I think the one on the left, playing the guitar, is John Updike.  The one on the right is John Wattle.  Everyone knows who John Updike is, but everyone should know John Wattle.  Every week there is a reading at Brown by a visiting author.  After the readings there is usually a reception.  John Wattle attends these readings.  Sometimes he falls asleep, but is very respectful otherwise.  When he falls asleep he pulls his hood over his head.  After the readings he goes to the reception and eats some of the food.  He doesn’t eat very much.  He grabs a few crackers and then leaves.  In my head I feel John Wattle deserves more.  I feel he deserves a sandwich, but I know if I bought him a sandwich he would not accept it.  One of the poets in the program has begun writing John Wattle’s autobiography.  The first line is, “It’s not just for crackers and cheese or coffee and wine…”  It will probably be out in the fall of 2011.  Some people in the program feel he was in the program himself.
